Michael Anthony Fell Hon RE was a painter and printmaker in the figurative tradition.

He studied painting and printmaking at the City & Guilds of London Art School. Michael took up a travelling scholarship in Europe in the late 1960s, studying the work of the great masters in Florence and Rome. He taught at the City & Guilds from the 1970s, and was head of foundation studies from 1985 to 1996. Michael was Chairman of the Society of Designer Craftsmen from 1984 to 1987. A solo exhibition of his work was held at the Bankside Gallery in 2010.

Michael’s art focuses on social life and nature in the three main areas he lived during his life, London, East Anglia and Gascony, France. He deploys brilliant colour in his oil paintings and controlled engraving techniques in his prints, to depict features of ordinary life. The work often contains a background of religious imagery, and historic and literary allusion.

There is a forthcoming book analysing Michael’s work entitled The Art of Michael Fell, to be published by Unicorn Press in 2024.
