MEET THE ARTIST - Kristen McClarty ARE

9 November 2025
Overview

Bankside Gallery | 2.30 - 4.30pm | Free admission | No booking required

Thsi event is an opportunity to meet one of our newest Associate RE members, Kristen McClarty, who is visiting us from South Africa, and will be at Bankside Gallery showing some of her work processes.

Kristen works primarily in woodcut and her current practice focusses on a particular place along the South Atlantic Ocean shoreline. She has named it, 'The Yellow Rock Fort'. As the sun bursts over Slangkop Mountain, the spotlit Yellow Rock Fort  becomes a theatre, a space for Kristen to play with shadow: forms, tenuously untethered from a body and altered by the shape and contours of the rocks.

Kristen's practice draws on the idea that lived experience lingers in a place as residual energy, pooling or mounting up as a palimpsest on the environment. Acutely aware of how surfaces translate into print, she attempts to read the marks of this residual energy from the world around her. Some of those marks she collects as graphite rubbings. Her shadow, a temporary celestial creature, appears in relation to those marks at The Yellow Rock Fort, and through the transmutation of its form, brings elements of that ‘text’ to life.

Kristen will be talking about developing this body of work and its series and also discussing her process and colour development. She also has a wealth of experience to share of exhibiting in the UK as an international artist, and of working with The Printing Girls which is a group of over 100 women printmakers in South Africa, managing and curating large exhibitions with them

Come along and say hi and ask any burning questions that you might have about Kristen's work and printmaking in general.

This event is free and there is no need to book.
