MEET THIS YEAR'S GUEST SELECTOR - TABISH KHAN
Tabish Khan is an art critic, speaker, podcaster and curator who writes about the London art world and beyond. Visiting hundreds of exhibitions a year he has an extensive overview of the art scene from a huge range of artists, from big international names to lesser-known emerging ones. He writes regularly for Londonist and FAD, and has also written for Artsy, Elephant and New York Observer. He believes that art should be accessible to all and is keen to demystify the art world. Tabish is regularly involved with selecting work for exhibitions so we welcome his keen eye and expertise in choosing the final works for Small But Mighty 2025.
We asked Tabish his thoughts on small scale artworks…
“Smaller works need to work harder to draw the viewer in and captivate them with their details. As someone who collects work and writes about it, I love collecting smaller works as they are more affordable. I can have more hanging in my small flat, and it allows me to support as many artists as possible. I own hundreds of works, and a lot of them are small, but mighty"
Tabish shares some advice for artists who might be considering whether to enter the competition...
"Entering prizes can be daunting as artists put their heart and soul into their work and then there's the possibility it may not make the cut. However, it's only by applying to prizes and open calls that artists get seen and nobody can discover a great artist if they aren't showing anywhere. When it comes to success as an artist it's the ones that keep persisting that are often the most successful"
We can't wait to see what Tabish selects from the entries for the resulting exhibition at Bankside Gallery in September!
